UCL Marshgate was designed to provide new spaces for collaborative thinking that transcends the boundaries of traditional academic activities. The new building, part of University College London, allows students and staff to immerse themselves in innovative activities and game changing approaches to research. This incredible project featuring over 34,000sqm of academic space is the size of nearly five Wembley football pitches!
Working closely with main contractor MACE, our team installed a variety of new floor finishes on all levels of the building.
The design of the floor finishes through out the building had a minimalist feel, with a neutral colour palette. To stay consistent with the design brief, our specialist team installed over 1,100 m2 of resin floor coatings to communal corridors, changing rooms, tea points and WC’s.
Extensive floor preparation, including grinding and liquid DPM, was completed to ensure a perfect surface prior to the final application. The resin produced a seamless, perfectly flat, floor finish with a durable and easy to maintain surface. Resin floor finishes work perfectly in high traffic areas or those subjected to water spillage.
Sheet vinyl, from Forbo’s Surestep range, was installed to the different laboratories on the upper floors. Over 12,000 m2 of vinyl was installed on top of 3mm latex floor preparation to complete a flat, hygienic floor finish. Our installation team installed coved skirting to all perimeters with colour matched welded joints as areas will be subject to spillages when in use. Once installed the vinyl was protected using 2mm Enviroboard supplied by our protection partner – Protec.
Forbo Laguna sheet vinyl was installed to some of the open breakout areas that were more likely to be subject to high level of foot traffic. As with the resin finishes this is durable and easy to maintain, while also offering a good level of slip resistance.
Desso Essence carpet tiles were the preferred choice for many of the teaching areas, including lecture theatres, study zones, cinema room and library. This range from Desso was created with versatility in mind, available in over 31 different colours. It is also hard-wearing and highly functional, with acoustic advantages making it perfect for use in these locations.
Ceramic tiling was installed to various locations throughout the building including the student canteen, showers, changing rooms and tea point splashbacks.
The stair cores throughout the building were left with a concrete finish and our team supplied and installed over 1100 stair nosing’s from Gradus.
